What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

Unexpected cardiac arrest may have a cardiac etiology, although this is not always the case.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA):

Unexpected heart stopping occurs when a person experiences sudden cardiac arrest. Usually, it results from an electrical issue in the heart that throws off its regular rhythm, making the heart tremble or “fibrillate” rather than pumping blood efficiently. Ventricular fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, causes a sudden stoppage of blood flow to the brain and other important organs.

Causes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

Coronary artery disease: Most SCA cases have underlying coronary artery disease, which narrows or blocks the heart's blood arteries due to plaque buildup.

Heart attack: Because injury to the heart muscle can interfere with its electrical function, a heart attack can be a cause of SCA.

Cardiac rhythm abnormalities: Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation are two examples of cardiac rhythm abnormalities that can cause SCA.

An increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can be caused by a number of anatomic abnormalities of the heart, including enlarged heart chambers and congenital heart defects.

SCA can also be brought on by external events such as drug abuse, trauma or electrocution.

Treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

Timely medical treatment is essential for survival. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) needs to be started immediately to get blood flowing to the brain and other organs. As quickly as possible, an automated external defibrillator (AED) should be used along with CPR to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm using electricity. For long-term care and to avoid recurrent episodes, advanced medical care—such as drugs or implanted devices—may be needed.
